Kardale Netball Club was founded in 1967 by Daphne Payne, a keen county netball player, who was a stalwart in promoting local netball. When the St Albans netball league was reformed in 1967, she bought together a Kardale team to play in the newly formed netball league. The club was named after the school where Daphne taught netball, Lyndale school, and Daphne’s daughter Karen, with team members being a combination of Lyndale pupils and Daphne’s family.
The club started with one senior team and slowly over several years it grew into four senior teams. In the present senior section of the club we have players playing in 10 different leagues, spanning ages from year 11 to our over 40’s team.
In early 1998 Daphne started a coaching night for junior players at Beaumont school which proved very popular and in early 2000 the junior club was formed; it started off as St Albans Junior Netball club and it quickly grew in popularity and had teams in every year group from year 5 to year 10. As this junior section was always closely associated with Kardale senior club, they changed their name a few years ago and is now known as Kardale junior netball club. The juniors section continues to grow in strength with over 140 junior players fielding 12 junior teams throughout the playing season.
Daphne was also instrumental in starting the senior St Albans netball league, currently running at Sandringham school, and the Verulam junior netball league which was a precursor to the now established Garden City Junior Netball League which all of our junior teams now play in.
Unfortunately, Daphne passed away in October 2008 but the club still maintains her ethos of providing community netball to all ages and abilities in an enjoyable and social environment, whilst still maintaining a competitive edge. We pride ourselves for being an all-inclusive club that provides opportunities for players to play in county, local and friendly leagues.
